Konstantinos Komaitis commented on Noncommercial Users Constituency's group 'GNSO: Registrar Accreditation Agreement (RAA) Working Group'
The public comment period for the RAA finishes on July 9, which is very close. I am not sure whether I will have the time to participate in this, because I have to be away for a week. However, I will do my best to at least write something.

Carlos Afonso commented on Konstantinos Komaitis's blog post 'Olympic - a Greek word: the mistake the International Olympic Committee makes'
Amazing case, indeed. Reminds me of that item we all have in our homes throughout the world (windows), even the ones which have no computers at all, which has been trademarked by the IPR owners of that lousy and insecure operating system. Big…

Olympic - a Greek word: the mistake the International Olympic Committee makes

Everyone who has been involved in ICANN over the past ten years is aware of the politics and the power struggles that take place within the corporation. Everyone who has been involved in ICANN is especially aware of the politics that take place lately over the introduction of new gTLDs and the protection of trademark owners and their rights. So, I really shouldn't have been surprised when the International Olympic Committee (IOC) joined forces with the trademark community, and started nagging…See More

ICANN sends the URS and the Clearinghouse back to the GNSO.

Here are some initial thoughts on ICANN's response to the IRT proposal, published a little earlier this month. Please bear in mind that ICANN is requesting GNSO¹s consensus view on the Trademark Clearinghouse and the Uniform Rapid Suspension System (URS). These are the views of myself and Kathy Kleiman and a reflection of our sense of events. NCUC will be meeting at length in Seoul to discuss the issues and develop our position for moving forward. To see the new documents, drafted by ICANN… Continue

An update on the IRT

On Wednesday, a US Congress Subcommittee held a Hearing on “Expansion of Top Level Domain Names and its Effects of Competition.” Members of the US House of Representatives questioned [names and organizations] whether the Internet climate is ready to accept an unlimited number of new gTLDs. At the heart of the discussions was trademark protection.

Doug Brent said that expansion of the root has been part of ICANN's mission since the beginning. New gTLDs will help registrant choice,… Continue

Internet Users Are Being Threatened: The IRT Meeting in London

I’ve just returned from ICANN's new gTLD meeting in London, where the Implementation Recommendation Team (IRT) presented its skewed vision of protection mechanisms for new gTLDs. London was the second stop of a consultation process, which started in New York and will finish in Abu Dhabi in the beginning of August (http://www.icann.org/en/topics/new-gtlds/consultation-outreach-en.htm). The idea behind these consultations, which are open to every interested party, is to give the opportunity to… Continue
